~ 1846 Heirloom ~

This is a very special piece to me... I really don't know who made it, except that it was one of my relations way back.... My paternal grandma's name was also Anne Newhall, same as the little girl who made this sampler, but for the 'e' on the end of her name. My middle name is also Anne after my grandma.

It was given to me by my grandpa on my 16th birthday after my grandma had already passed away. I would have loved to ask her more about it..... but as always, the story of that side of the family will always be shrouded with a little mystery.....

I love the coarse material she used.... all the different fonts and stitches... and only a few choices of colors... and such a sweet little poem - but my favorite part is the verse on it!

Even a sweet little house in the midst of the flowers...

And so old! 163 years ago!!

And she was only 6 when she finished this (it's about 16"x16") - can you imagine a six year old now, sitting still long enough to work on such a big, detailed piece?

I would love to frame it - my grandpa asked me to when he gave it to me - but I have never been able to find anything fitting (old, the right size, character to it and within a small budget!).

Here is the back - I wonder why she sewed paper to it?

I hope you enjoyed your 'peak into the past' at my place! Stop by again!

WOW! That is fabulous!.. and in such good condition for being 163 years old! I can't believe a 6 year old made this!! Imagine the things we could accomplish without video games and tv's! LOL!

You have a very valuable piece there! When you do have it framed, make sure you use a good framer that uses special glass and matting for antiques. The acid in matting can eat through the fabric. Until then store it rolled up between 100% cotton fabric so that the folds don't break the fibers. (I'm an antique dealer, if you haven't already guessed!)

Thank you for the tips on framing! Right now I have it stored flat - I think it was folded before I had it. I tried to carefully iron out the wrinkles (through a thick towel) a while ago, but they didn't come out. I actually have another one my grandpa gave me at the same time - but the name on it is unfamiliar so it doesn't mean as much to me as this one does. =)

Beautiful! Wow, it is so old and in such good shape. I agree - acid free matting is in order and a framer that understands vintage handwork. You have a real treasure there.

Amazing heirloom and even more amazing that it was a 6 year old that made it! No, I can not imagine a child today doing that, but then again if I took away the TV... no, probably not LOL

Thank you for sharing a remarkable piece from your family :)

Hello - thank you for joining the party! I adore this old sampler. I grew up around a lot of cross stitching. My Mama had made a few samplers when I was young, although she was not 6 like the maker of yours! Oh my, it must have taken her a long time to finish such a beautiful large piece. I also love the poem, cute little house and flowers. So precious!

Blessings,
Marie

WOW! I love this! My mom has a bunch of cross-stiched pieces on her wall that I just love, and I have a few. But this is just amazing, both the fact that it is so old, and that it was made a 6 yr old.

And I agree, it's a valuable piece...although if I had a piece like this I'd never want to sell it. I'd get too attached!
